How to Fix a Scratch on a Door

Using Putty to Restore Your Door’s Smooth Finish

Scratched doors can be an eyesore, especially if the damage is deep. Whether your furry friend left their mark or everyday wear and tear took its toll, the good news is that fixing a scratched door is a straightforward process. With the right materials and a little patience, Brian shows us in this video how you can restore your door. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get the job done.

Step 1: Assess the Damage

Before diving into repairs, evaluate the depth of the scratch. If it’s minor, a little sanding and touch-up paint may do the trick. However, if the scratch is deep—especially if chunks of wood are missing—you’ll need a two-part putty filler to rebuild the damaged area.In Brian’s case, there were a number of scratches from his dog.

Step 2: Prepare Your Materials

You'll need:

  • Two-part putty or filler
  • Putty knife
  • Orbital sander or sanding block
  • 120-grit sandpaper
  • Damp cloth
  • Paint and primer
  • Gloves for protection

Step 3: Mix and Apply the Putty

For deep scratches, a two-part putty works best. Follow these steps:

  1. Put on gloves to keep your hands clean.
  2. Mix the putty according to the instructions. This typically involves combining the base with a hardener.
  3. Once mixed, apply the putty generously using a putty knife. Ensure it fills all crevices and sits slightly above the scratch to account for sanding later.
  4. Work quickly—once the putty starts setting, it hardens fast.

Step 4: Allow the Putty to Dry

The putty should harden within 15-20 minutes. Resist the urge to touch it while it dries (though staring at it and willing it to dry faster is entirely understandable).

Step 5: Sand It Smooth

Once the putty has fully dried:

  1. Use an orbital sander or a sanding block with 120-grit sandpaper.
  2. Feather the edges so the transition from the original surface to the patched area is seamless.
  3. Wipe down the surface with a damp cloth to remove any dust.

Step 6: Apply Paint and Primer

Finding the right paint match can be tricky, but once you do, apply at least two coats for the best results:

  1. If you’re using a paint-and-primer combo, start painting directly onto the repaired area.
  2. Allow each coat to dry before applying the next.
  3. Once done, step back and admire the seamless finish—no one will ever know there was a scratch!

While fixing scratches is easy, preventing them is another challenge. If pets are the culprits, consider installing a protective barrier or training them to avoid scratching. Now that your door looks brand new, it’s time to tackle the source of the problem!
