The Best Way to Keep Cordless Tool Batteries Charged and Ready for Use

One answer, of course, is to leave the battery in the charger so that it’s always fully charged and ready to go. However, this may lead to battery degradation and shorter life, especially in older power tools

Newer cordless tools with modern lithium ion batteries are designed to charge the battery more intelligently. From what I can tell, constantly charging them is less likely to have a negative effect on battery life.

Here’s a solution for keeping an older battery ready for use at any time. Plug a power strip into a 24-hour timer then plug the battery charges into the power strip. Set the timer to come on for, say, fifteen minutes a day. This method should keep the batteries fully charged without shortening their life.
